UK newspaper and news website The Telegraph has included Larnaca in a travel feature on the world’s 20 oldest cities that remain inhabited today.
An article on www.telegraph.co.uk on Monday noted the earliest inhabitants settled in Larnaca in 1,400 BC.
“Founded as ‘Citium’ by the Phoenicians, Larnaca is well-known for its pretty seafront lined with palm trees. Archaeological sites and numerous beaches attract modern visitors,” the article says, also noting that British travel writer Robert Byron once said of Cyprus: “History in this island is almost too profuse. It gives one a sort of mental indigestion.”
Also included on the list are Jericho in the Palestinian Territories which is listed as being the oldest continuously inhabited city, Byblos in Lebanon, Aleppo and Damascus both in Syria, Susa in Iran, and Faiyum in Egypt, amongst others.
The Telegraph noted that not all 20 cities were currently able to welcome visitors.
